Ode to Buttons

When I got home from church tonight I got an email telling me that Jimmy's dog, Buttons, died this morning. (see feb. blog "Missing Jimmy"). Buttons was a faithful dog that Jimmy loved dearly so, after a good cry, I decided I would write an "Ode to Buttons"; and maybe explain, with a bit of humor, why we dog lovers are so loyal to our furry friends. Buttons would have been 15 this October.

A Dog is a Dog

By Natalie Hood

A dog is a dog

But never "just" a dog

For dogs are mans best friend.

In the rough times

And even tough times

He'll stand by you through thick or thin.

A dog is a dog

And just about any ole' dog

Is better than none at all.

For who but your dog

Can make it all better

With a lick in the face when you fall?

A dog is a dog

And I'd be dog gone

If I forgot to ask you this:

What other friend

Would share his house

On those nights that your wife is miffed?

A dog is a dog

And there's no friend like a dog

If only for this reason, you see:

Who, but your dog,

Will join in with you

Even when you're singing off key?
